Gestern war wieder ein sehr interessanter Tag. Am Vormittag haben wir zu Fuss ca. 2h den Bryce Canyon mit seinen tief orange farbenen Sandsteinformen entdeckt. Bei Sonnenschein und sehr viel Wind sind wir bis in den Grund des Canyons gelaufen um dann wieder zwischen den atemberaubenden Steinformationen nach oben zu wandern. Weiter ging es in Richtung Zion NP. Hier haben wir es noch vor Sonnenuntergang bis zum Ende des Canyons geschafft und sind entlang des Virgin River gelaufen. Im Gegensatz zu den anderen bisher besuchten Canyons waren wir diesmal am Taggrund und konnten die imposanten Berge aus verfestigten Sandstein und den haengenden Gaerten nur von unten bewundern.

Je weiter wir nun in Richtung Westen kommen und die bekannteren Nationalparks besuchen, desto mehr Leute begegnen uns. Die Staedte werden immer touristischer, die Hotels und Motels leider immer teurer und die Einsamkeit eines Black Canyon ist nur noch schwer zu finden. Nichts desto trotz fahren wir taeglich durch atemberaubende Landschaften, die durch die Kraefte der Erde geformt wurden. Wir sind nun in der Gegend, wo man viele Fossilien von Dinosaurier gefunden hat und mit den Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument kann man die aufgefalteten verschiedenen Erdschichten ueber Kilometer bewundern.

Heute ging es weiter in Richtung Page, dem Tor zum Grand Canyon und Antelope Canyon. Hier sind wir in der Wueste von Arizona, haben die Grand Staircase Escalante hinter uns gelassen, haben einen sternenklaren Himmel und das Mondlicht uberstrahlt die Canyonlandschaft rund um den Horseshoe Bend. Wir haben wieder einen tollen Sonnenuntergang erlebt und sind froh, dass wir dem angekuendigten Schnee entfliehen konnten.

The last couple of days where dominated by a lot of wind, sunshine, very cool temperatures some snow and a lot of tourists.

Yesterday morning we visited Bryce Canyon where we hiked down to the canyon floor through impressive and colorful hoodos. We connected a couple of trails and managed to get away from the crowd. However, we were still hiking at a fast pace so that we were back at the car in the early afternoon. Since there was not much more to see at Bryce (unless we had opted to hike into the backcountry) we decided to take advantage of the still good weather and head out to Zion National Park. We both liked Bryce Canyon a lot. The colors and all the hoodos are very impressive - plus we managed to escape the crowds.

Zion was completely different. It felt more like Dinseyland instead of a peaceful National Park. We still managed to find a parking spot at the Visitor's Center and took the Valley Floor bus up the Scenic Drive in the Canyon. The hanging gardens were nice and at the end of the valley we did do a short hike to the narrow part of the Canyon. However, too many people and YAC - "Yet Another Canyon". We were glad to head out to Hurricane where we spent the night and both decided that we did not need to go back to Zion.

This morning we woke up to very cool temperatures and strong winds. Our schedule called for a short driving day back through Zion, past Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument to the gate of the Grand Canyon: Page in Arizona. The first climb up to the plateau of the Zion Canyon gave us the first snow of the year. However, it wasn't enough to cover the streets and driving was ok.

Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument "GSENM" is the area where the world's most dinausor fossils are found. We visited an exhibition at the BLM headoffice and then headed on to Page. YATT "Yet another touristy town". Tomorrow we have Antelope Canyon on our program before we head out to Grand Canyon and Las Vegas the next days.

Arches Nationalpark

Today we visited Arches National Park. Even though the pictures turned out great we were not that overwhelmed by this park. We figure that this mainly was because we visited Canyonlands the day before. Canyonlands is vast, remote and absolutely breathtaking. Arches was overrun by tourists, only very few really picturesque arches and after having seen a bit of red sandstone it just didn't really blow us off our feet. We still did have a great time though.

We are now in Panguitch and will visit some more canyons tomorrow - Bryce Canyon. The weather forecast calls for snow.. brrrrr.

Nach einem atemberaubenden Nachmittag in den Canyonlands haben wir uns heute den Arches Nationalpark angeschaut. Bei Sonnenaufgang ging es los und natuerlich haben wir uns auch den Delicate Arch nicht entgehen lassen. Obwohl die Bilder richtig toll aussehen, waren wir diesmal nicht so begeistert. Es gab gar nicht so viele Arches zu sehen und es waren sehr viele Leute unterwegs. Im Gegensatz zu den anderen NP waren wir diesmal nicht so alleine. Heute mittag ging es weiter in Richtung Westen nach Panguitch um uns nun den Bryce Canyon anzuschauen. Wir sind gespannt, wie es wird, denn es ist Schnee fuer morgen angesagt.

Canyonlands National Park

1600 miles driven since Denver and our red Toyota Corolla is running smoothly. Today we arrived in Moab, found a place to sleep and went straight on to the Canyonlands National Park. Here the Colorado River and the Green River flow together. The landscape is purely amazing. This is what you call big country. Tomorrow we're off to Arches NP. We'll try to catch the sunrise.

1600 Meilen seit Denver und unser kleiner, roter Toyota Corolla laeuft bestens. Heute haben wir den Canyonlands Nationalpark besichtigt. Hier fließen der Colorado und der Green River zusammen. Die Landschaft ist sehr beeindruckend. Man hat das Gefühl die Erde offnet hier die Geheimnisse Millionen Jahre alter Geschichte. Morgen geht es in den Arches NP, aber jetzt essen wir erst noch beim Mexikaner zu Abend.

Monument Valley

Greetings from Bluff, Utah. Today we had an incredibly beautiful day. We started out early in the morning leaving Mancos at 7 am to be at the gate for Mesa Verde as soon as it opens. We had our breakfast inside the NP on top of a mountain overlooking the Montezuma plains while the sun was rising. Of course we also checked out the cliff dwellings which we found to be interesting but not necessarily overwhelming.

We then headed out west into the desert stopping at the four corners where Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Utah meet. Quick lunch there and then on to Monument Valley where we spent the entire afternoon in the park checking out all the buttes.

Tomorrow we are on our way to Moab. We slightly changed our plans and will now be going over the top, ie Canyonlands NP, Arches NP, Bryce, Zion, Antelope and then Grand Canyon. Meanwhile we notice that it is a lot more touristy here than when we were in Colorado with Mike and Susanna- thanks again for those great days guys!!

Wieder ein Lebenszeichen aus Bluff, Utah. Wir sind heute von Mancos über Mesa Verde, den Four Corners und dem Monument Valley nach Bluff gefahren. Es gibt ganz viele atemberaubenden Bilder, die wir nur leider im Moment nicht posten können. Morgen geht es weiter nach Moab und in den Canyonlands Nationalpark. Wir haben unsere Route leicht abgeändert und fahren jetzt oben rum, dh Arches NP, Bryce, Zion, Antelope und dann der Grand Canyon.

Hiking on the Mesa

This morning we planned the next couple days of our trip. In the afternoon we went out on a small hike along Deer Trap Mesa in Los Alamos. Just as we got back it started to rain and we got to see a nice rainbow. Tomorrow we're off to Mesa Verde via Taos and Wolf Creek Pass.

Nach einiger Detailplanung fuer die kommenden Tage haben wir uns auf eine kleine Wanderung begeben. Entlang dem Deer Trap Mesa konnten wir schoene Aussichten auf die Landschaft um Los Alamos geniessen. Morgen geht es dann weiter ueber Taos bis nach Mesa Verde.

Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta

Yesterday we spent an early morning at the Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque. During mass ascenscion we saw over 650 balloons rise into the sky. This was quite an impressive and also very colorful sight. Luckily the weather was still nice in the moring with only weak winds and a few clouds. However, this changed in the afternoon. Wind picked up and clouds moved in. The start for the Gordon Bennett Race which we wanted to see was postponed until at least Monday. So we decided to leave around noon and headed out to Santa Fe where we did some touristy sightseeing in this very beautiful town. In the late afternoon we drove out to Los Alamos where we visited a historic museum about the development of the atomic bombs. Now we are kind of stuck in Los Alamos. We decided to spend the night there since meanwhile temperatures have dropped and heavy rain has kicked in. Furthermore we opted to spend another night here and wait for the weather to clear out before we head back into the mountains of the Taos area. So today will be a planning and relaxing day - plus we'll probably get around to doing some laundry.

Gestern war der Tag, auf den sich Marcus schon so lange gefreut hat: Massenstart von ca. 650 Heissluftballons bei Sonnenaufgang in Albuquerque. Nach einer langen Fahrt von Gunnisson nach New Mexico haben wir gestern einen wunderschoenen Morgen auf dem Balloon Festival verbracht. Leider ist das Wetter gegen Mittag immer kuehler und windiger geworden, so dass der Start des Gordon Bennett Rennen verschoben wurde. So beschlossen wir, weiter Richtung Norden zu fahren und haben Santa Fe mit seinen Adobe Haeuser und dem sehr eindrucksvollen Plaza besucht. Anschliessend ging es weiter nach Los Alamos. Hier wurde bis 1945 intensiv an der Entwicklung der Atombomben zur Beendigung des zweiten Weltkrieges im Rahmen des Manhatten Projektes gearbeitet. Da das Wetter heute leider sehr verregnet und sehr kalt ist, haben wir beschlossen noch einen weiteren Tag hier auf den Mesas zu verbringen. Morgen geht es dann weiter nach Taos und Cortez, wo wir den Nationalpark der Mesa Verde besuchen werden.

Colorado mit Mike & Susanna

Die letzten zwei Tage hier in der Gegend um Gunnisson waren einfach atemberaubend schoen. Unsere Fahrt von Castle Rock nach Gunnisson ging durch wunderschoene weitlaeufige Landschaften mit kilometerlangen geraden Strassen und rechts und links riesige Ranches. Gestern haben wir den Black Canyon of the Gunnisson River entlang der Nordkante entdeckt ... und es war wunderschoen. Hier fliesst der Gunnisson River durch eine sehr enge und tiefe Schlucht. Vielleicht ist er vergleichbar mit der Gorges du Verdon in Frankfreich. Schwarze Steine durchzogen mit roten Streifen, tosendes Wasser und tolle Steinformationen entlang des Wasserlaufes. Heute waren wir wieder in den Bergen und haben die Aspen Waelder mit ihren unglaublich intensiven gelben Farben genossen. Morgen geht es weiter in Richtung Albuquerque ... eine unserer laengsten Autofahrten an einem Tag in Richtung San Francisco. Wir werden wohl 8 bis 9 Stunden unterwegs sein.

The last couple days we spent with Mike and Susanna. We had a fantastic time exploring the Black Canyon of the Gunnison and the incredible fall colors of the Aspen trees in the Rockies.

Today we were out on Ohio Pass and dropped into Crested Butte - one of Colorado's better know backcountry ski resorts.

Tomorrow we're off to Albuquerque on the Million Dollar Highway. It'll be a long but scenic drive!
