We arrived back home safely after a fast flight from San Francisco to Frankfurt. Strong tailwinds helped to keep the flight just below an amazing 10 hours. Ironically enough it took us another 5 1/2 hours after landing to get home from Frankfurt. Still it was a fast trip home.

We will put up one last conclusion post in this blog exploiting our trips statistics as well as a link to a detailed picture page once it has been set up!

Wir sind wieder sicher in Deutschland gelandet. Starker Rückenwind hat unseren Flug von San Francisco nach Frankfurt erheblich abgekürzt, so dass wir weniger als 10 Stunden in der Luft waren. Die Heimreise mit der Bahn nach Waldkirch hat dann aber selber nochmal 5 1/2 Stunden gedauert.

Wir werden noch einmal einen abschliessenden Post hier reinstellen mit allen Statistiken, sowie einem Link zu einer Bilderseite.

Last Day

Today was our last full day in the States. We started out by visiting Al Catraz and then walked over Coit Hill down into North Side from where we caught the bus back "home" to our motel. By car we then drove up to Twin Peaks for an overview of San Francisco only to continue on to the western end of the Golden Gate Entrance. We watched the sunset and then drove through the town to Lombard Street where we went down the steepest and crookedest street in San Francisco.

We just completed our online check in at the Apple store next door and will leave it with that. It's dinner time now!

Heute war unser letzter voller Tag in den USA. Begonnen haben wir den Tag mit dem Besuch von Al Catraz. Wir sind dann ueber den Telegraph Hill in die North Side gelaufen und haben den Bus zurueck zum Hotel genommen. Mit dem Auto sind wir dann auf die Twin Peaks gefahren und anschliessend an das Suedwestende der Golden Gate Meeresenge. Dort haben wir den Sonnenuntergang abgepasst und sind dann mit dem Auto zur steilsten und schiefsten Strasse, der Lombardt Street, gefahren.

Soeben haben wir unseren Online Checkin im Apple Store durchgefuehrt und werden jetzt zu Abend essen gehen.

San Francisco

Only a short note - we biked over the Golden Gate Bridge with a tandem bike today. It was sunny and very warm - kinda felt like summer. Tomorrow we're going to prison, i.e. we'll be visiting Al Catraz. We did post some pictures now so please feel free to scroll down, have a look and leave a comment :-))

Heute sind wir mit dem Tandemfahrrad ueber die Golden Gate Bridg geradelt. Es war sonnig und sehr warm - fast schon sommerlich. Morgen gehen wir ins Gefaengnis - nicht weil wir etwas verbrochen haben, sondern weil wir Al Catraz besichtigen werden. Uebrigens haben wir ein paar Bilder hochgeladen. Es lohnt sich also herunter zu scrollen, zu schauen und auch einen Kommentar zu hinterlassen :-))

Montara to San Francisco

After roughly 3.900 miles we today arrived in San Francisco just before noon. We started the morning with a foggy look out our window to the not visible ocean. However, the sun did come out quite fast so that we could enjoy the morning latte on the deck beneath the lighthouse overlooking the Pacific.

We then drove on to San Francisco - a leisurely 45 minute drive. After checking in we hit the city: Chinatown (where we had a yummy lunch), Union Square, and then riding the cable car to Fishermen's wharf. Tomorrow we're going to rent a tandem bike and cycle over the Golden Gate bridge to Sausalito and maybe a bit further.

Nach ca. 3.900 Meilen sind wir heute am frühen Nachmittag in San Francisco angekommen. Zuvor, nachdem sich der morgendliche Nebel gelichtet hatte, konnten wir unter dem Leuchtturm mit Blick auf den Pazifik in der kalifornischen Sonne einen Café Latte geniessen. So gestärkt waren wir für eine kurze, gemütliche Fahrt von 45 Minuten bis San Francisco gerüstet. Dort angekommen sind wir ziemlich bald die Stadt erkunden gegangen: Chinatown (wo es ein leckeres Mittagessen gab), Union Square, Cable Car und Fishermen's Wharf. Morgen wollen wir uns ein Tandem Fahrrad mieten und über die Golden Gate nach Sausalito oder gar ein bischen weiter fahren.

Greeting the Pacific Ocean

Today we finally arrived at our western point of the trip. Near Monterey we hit the Pacific Ocean - first time ever for Katrin. We continued up north on US Highway 1 stopping by several beaches, enjoying a cool and windy sunset and some excellent seafood. To top it all out we found an absolutely amazing and romantic spot for the night: The watch house of a lighthouse on the Californian coast. We can hear the waves breaking below us and are looking forward to watching the sun rise over the ocean from our bed when we wake up tomorrow morning.

Heute sind wir am westlichsten Punkt unserer Reise angekommen. Bei Monterey haben wir die Hände in den Pazifischen Ozean gehalten. Weiter ging es entlang dem Highway 1 über Santa Cruz Richtung Norden. Kitesurfer, sehr viel Wind, leckeres Seafood, ein paar Seelöwen, Kormoräne und ein traumhafter Sonnenuntergang haben uns begleitet. Als kronender Abschluß übernachten wir im Wachhaus eines Leuchtturms auf den Klippen der kalifornischen Küste. Wir hoeren die Wellen brechen und freuen uns auf einen schönen Sonnenaufgang mit Blick aufs Meer aus unserem Bett heraus.

Yosemite - The Experience

We spent two days in Yosemite. The first day unfortunately had bad weather with low lying clouds and the occassional snow shower. However, we did set out for a hike to Dog Lake and climbed Lembert Dome. All in all it was a peaceful chilly day with no crowds at all. We really enjoyed that. On the evening we still went down to the beaches of Mono Lake to see the Tufas in the evening light. Here we surely weren't alone. We figured that at least some 50 Asians were there, all with heavy photographic equipment to take pictures of the sunset. We perfectly blended in with our two cameras :-)



Day two finally greeted us with Yosemite sunshine. Our first stop was a hike down to Tuolomne Grove to see the Giant Sequoia trees. These trees are quite impressive. Next we headed down into Yosemite Valley where we shared the common sights of Bridalveil Falls, El Capitan, Tunnel View and Mirror Lake with a million other tourists. Unfortunately we could not see Half Dome reflect itself in Mirror Lake because the lake itself was dry. It also was a bit hazy in the valley due to smoke from some wildfires. We still had a great day though.

Unser erster Tag im Yosemite war durch schlechtes Wetter geprägt. Tiefhaengende Wolken und gelegentliche Schneeschauer sorgten dafür dass wir ziemlich alleine auf dem Wanderweg zum Dog Lake und auf den Lenbert Dome hinauf waren. Es war zwar recht kühl, uns hat es aber sehr gut gefallen. Am Abend waren wir dann noch am Mono Lake, um uns die Tufas genauer anzusehen. Hier waren wir nicht alleine. Wir schätzen, dass ungefähr 50 Asiaten mit teilweise recht heftiger Fotoausrüstung zu Gänge waren. Mit unseren beiden Kameras haben wir aber dann doch ganz gut ins Bild gepasst :-)

Der zweite Tag in Yosemite brachte endlich den Sonnenschein und blauen Himmel. Unser erster Stop waren die Giant Sequoias im Tuolomne Grove bevor wir dann zu all den anderen Touristen ins Yosemite Tal gefahren sind. Hier haben wir uns die bekannten Spots wie dieBeidalveil Falls, Tunnel View, El Caputan und Mirror Lake angesehen. Leider war im Nirror Lake kein Wasser, so dass sich der Half Dome nicht darin spurgeln konnte. Trotzdem war es sehr schoen und hat uns beiden gut gefallen.

Bodie - Wild West ghost town

So today will be our first day hiking in Yosemite. Unfortunately we didn't manage to coordinate our schedule in a way that we'd hit Yosemite midweek. So we'll have to battle the crowds and dig the premium prices.

Yesterday we visited the ghost town of Bodie and a couple of hot springs near Bridgeport. We are currently logged into a wifi of Obama supporters and yeah - the password is Obama.

Heute werden wir auf Schustere Rappen den Yosemite erkunden. Leider lassst unser Zeitplan keinen Besuch unter der Woche zu, so dass wir vermutlich mit Menschenhorden und überteuerten Preisen kämpfen werden. Egal, wir planen auf dem Tioga Pass ein wenig zu wandern. Tagesziel ist Lembert Dome und Dog Lake.

Gestern waren wir in Bodie, einer richtigen Wildwest Ghost Town.

Welcome to California

Wow - almost one week without Internet access - including Las Vegas. We're sorry our blog has been a little lean the past days but we seriously did not find any opportunity to hook up with the net for free. Even now we only have limited access so this will be a short update.






Leaving Page, AZ we visited Antelope Canyon which was gorgeous but also expensive (52 us$). We enjoyed it though and it was worth the money. Next stop was the Grand Canyon. A great place but very overrun. We only did the short hikes on the rim and decided to move on to Las Vegas where we spent two nights. Again Las Vegas is great to experience and a fun place but after two nights we were done. We visited two fantastic shows and didn't lose any money gambling!





From Las Vegas we left in search for some solitude which we found in Death Valley. In fact we both fell in love with this amazing place that we decided to spend another day there. So yesterday we did a hike around Ubehebe crater and visited Scotty's Castle. The colors on Death Valley are amazing and the cool temperatures of arond 33 Celsius certainly contributed to our liking.





We are moe on Bishop, CA and will push north today visiting Mono Lake and Bodie. Tomorrow we'll be hiking in the Sierras and then it's Yosemite and San Francisco.

More deatails on all as soon as we get a decent connection to the Internet.

Jetzt waren wir fast eine Woche ohne Internetzugang. Daher der etwas spaerliche Blog die letzten Tage. Selbst jetzt können wir keine Bilder hochladen, aber keine Angst - das holen wir noch nach.

Die letzten Stationen waren Antelope Canyon, Grand Canyon, Las Vegas und Death Valley. Antelope und Death Valley waren super. Grand Canyon war und zu überlaufen. Las Vegas muss man erlebt haben. Wir hatten Spaß dort, haben zwei tolle Shows besucht und sogar 32 US$ ohne Einsatz gewonnen. (das Hotel hat einem ein 20 US$ Spielguthaben gegeben.

Wir sind nun in Bishop, CA und werden die nächsten Tage in den Sierras verbringen bevor es nach San Francisco geht.

Horseshoe Bend (Page, AZ)



Gestern war wieder ein sehr interessanter Tag. Am Vormittag haben wir zu Fuss ca. 2h den Bryce Canyon mit seinen tief orange farbenen Sandsteinformen entdeckt. Bei Sonnenschein und sehr viel Wind sind wir bis in den Grund des Canyons gelaufen um dann wieder zwischen den atemberaubenden Steinformationen nach oben zu wandern. Weiter ging es in Richtung Zion NP. Hier haben wir es noch vor Sonnenuntergang bis zum Ende des Canyons geschafft und sind entlang des Virgin River gelaufen. Im Gegensatz zu den anderen bisher besuchten Canyons waren wir diesmal am Taggrund und konnten die imposanten Berge aus verfestigten Sandstein und den haengenden Gaerten nur von unten bewundern.

Je weiter wir nun in Richtung Westen kommen und die bekannteren Nationalparks besuchen, desto mehr Leute begegnen uns. Die Staedte werden immer touristischer, die Hotels und Motels leider immer teurer und die Einsamkeit eines Black Canyon ist nur noch schwer zu finden. Nichts desto trotz fahren wir taeglich durch atemberaubende Landschaften, die durch die Kraefte der Erde geformt wurden. Wir sind nun in der Gegend, wo man viele Fossilien von Dinosaurier gefunden hat und mit den Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument kann man die aufgefalteten verschiedenen Erdschichten ueber Kilometer bewundern.

Heute ging es weiter in Richtung Page, dem Tor zum Grand Canyon und Antelope Canyon. Hier sind wir in der Wueste von Arizona, haben die Grand Staircase Escalante hinter uns gelassen, haben einen sternenklaren Himmel und das Mondlicht uberstrahlt die Canyonlandschaft rund um den Horseshoe Bend. Wir haben wieder einen tollen Sonnenuntergang erlebt und sind froh, dass wir dem angekuendigten Schnee entfliehen konnten.

The last couple of days where dominated by a lot of wind, sunshine, very cool temperatures some snow and a lot of tourists.

Yesterday morning we visited Bryce Canyon where we hiked down to the canyon floor through impressive and colorful hoodos. We connected a couple of trails and managed to get away from the crowd. However, we were still hiking at a fast pace so that we were back at the car in the early afternoon. Since there was not much more to see at Bryce (unless we had opted to hike into the backcountry) we decided to take advantage of the still good weather and head out to Zion National Park. We both liked Bryce Canyon a lot. The colors and all the hoodos are very impressive - plus we managed to escape the crowds.

Zion was completely different. It felt more like Dinseyland instead of a peaceful National Park. We still managed to find a parking spot at the Visitor's Center and took the Valley Floor bus up the Scenic Drive in the Canyon. The hanging gardens were nice and at the end of the valley we did do a short hike to the narrow part of the Canyon. However, too many people and YAC - "Yet Another Canyon". We were glad to head out to Hurricane where we spent the night and both decided that we did not need to go back to Zion.

This morning we woke up to very cool temperatures and strong winds. Our schedule called for a short driving day back through Zion, past Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument to the gate of the Grand Canyon: Page in Arizona. The first climb up to the plateau of the Zion Canyon gave us the first snow of the year. However, it wasn't enough to cover the streets and driving was ok.

Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument "GSENM" is the area where the world's most dinausor fossils are found. We visited an exhibition at the BLM headoffice and then headed on to Page. YATT "Yet another touristy town". Tomorrow we have Antelope Canyon on our program before we head out to Grand Canyon and Las Vegas the next days.

Arches Nationalpark

Today we visited Arches National Park. Even though the pictures turned out great we were not that overwhelmed by this park. We figure that this mainly was because we visited Canyonlands the day before. Canyonlands is vast, remote and absolutely breathtaking. Arches was overrun by tourists, only very few really picturesque arches and after having seen a bit of red sandstone it just didn't really blow us off our feet. We still did have a great time though.

We are now in Panguitch and will visit some more canyons tomorrow - Bryce Canyon. The weather forecast calls for snow.. brrrrr.

Nach einem atemberaubenden Nachmittag in den Canyonlands haben wir uns heute den Arches Nationalpark angeschaut. Bei Sonnenaufgang ging es los und natuerlich haben wir uns auch den Delicate Arch nicht entgehen lassen. Obwohl die Bilder richtig toll aussehen, waren wir diesmal nicht so begeistert. Es gab gar nicht so viele Arches zu sehen und es waren sehr viele Leute unterwegs. Im Gegensatz zu den anderen NP waren wir diesmal nicht so alleine. Heute mittag ging es weiter in Richtung Westen nach Panguitch um uns nun den Bryce Canyon anzuschauen. Wir sind gespannt, wie es wird, denn es ist Schnee fuer morgen angesagt.

Canyonlands National Park

1600 miles driven since Denver and our red Toyota Corolla is running smoothly. Today we arrived in Moab, found a place to sleep and went straight on to the Canyonlands National Park. Here the Colorado River and the Green River flow together. The landscape is purely amazing. This is what you call big country. Tomorrow we're off to Arches NP. We'll try to catch the sunrise.

1600 Meilen seit Denver und unser kleiner, roter Toyota Corolla laeuft bestens. Heute haben wir den Canyonlands Nationalpark besichtigt. Hier fließen der Colorado und der Green River zusammen. Die Landschaft ist sehr beeindruckend. Man hat das Gefühl die Erde offnet hier die Geheimnisse Millionen Jahre alter Geschichte. Morgen geht es in den Arches NP, aber jetzt essen wir erst noch beim Mexikaner zu Abend.

Monument Valley

Greetings from Bluff, Utah. Today we had an incredibly beautiful day. We started out early in the morning leaving Mancos at 7 am to be at the gate for Mesa Verde as soon as it opens. We had our breakfast inside the NP on top of a mountain overlooking the Montezuma plains while the sun was rising. Of course we also checked out the cliff dwellings which we found to be interesting but not necessarily overwhelming.

We then headed out west into the desert stopping at the four corners where Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Utah meet. Quick lunch there and then on to Monument Valley where we spent the entire afternoon in the park checking out all the buttes.

Tomorrow we are on our way to Moab. We slightly changed our plans and will now be going over the top, ie Canyonlands NP, Arches NP, Bryce, Zion, Antelope and then Grand Canyon. Meanwhile we notice that it is a lot more touristy here than when we were in Colorado with Mike and Susanna- thanks again for those great days guys!!

Wieder ein Lebenszeichen aus Bluff, Utah. Wir sind heute von Mancos über Mesa Verde, den Four Corners und dem Monument Valley nach Bluff gefahren. Es gibt ganz viele atemberaubenden Bilder, die wir nur leider im Moment nicht posten können. Morgen geht es weiter nach Moab und in den Canyonlands Nationalpark. Wir haben unsere Route leicht abgeändert und fahren jetzt oben rum, dh Arches NP, Bryce, Zion, Antelope und dann der Grand Canyon.

Hiking on the Mesa

This morning we planned the next couple days of our trip. In the afternoon we went out on a small hike along Deer Trap Mesa in Los Alamos. Just as we got back it started to rain and we got to see a nice rainbow. Tomorrow we're off to Mesa Verde via Taos and Wolf Creek Pass.

Nach einiger Detailplanung fuer die kommenden Tage haben wir uns auf eine kleine Wanderung begeben. Entlang dem Deer Trap Mesa konnten wir schoene Aussichten auf die Landschaft um Los Alamos geniessen. Morgen geht es dann weiter ueber Taos bis nach Mesa Verde.

Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta

Yesterday we spent an early morning at the Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque. During mass ascenscion we saw over 650 balloons rise into the sky. This was quite an impressive and also very colorful sight. Luckily the weather was still nice in the moring with only weak winds and a few clouds. However, this changed in the afternoon. Wind picked up and clouds moved in. The start for the Gordon Bennett Race which we wanted to see was postponed until at least Monday. So we decided to leave around noon and headed out to Santa Fe where we did some touristy sightseeing in this very beautiful town. In the late afternoon we drove out to Los Alamos where we visited a historic museum about the development of the atomic bombs. Now we are kind of stuck in Los Alamos. We decided to spend the night there since meanwhile temperatures have dropped and heavy rain has kicked in. Furthermore we opted to spend another night here and wait for the weather to clear out before we head back into the mountains of the Taos area. So today will be a planning and relaxing day - plus we'll probably get around to doing some laundry.

Gestern war der Tag, auf den sich Marcus schon so lange gefreut hat: Massenstart von ca. 650 Heissluftballons bei Sonnenaufgang in Albuquerque. Nach einer langen Fahrt von Gunnisson nach New Mexico haben wir gestern einen wunderschoenen Morgen auf dem Balloon Festival verbracht. Leider ist das Wetter gegen Mittag immer kuehler und windiger geworden, so dass der Start des Gordon Bennett Rennen verschoben wurde. So beschlossen wir, weiter Richtung Norden zu fahren und haben Santa Fe mit seinen Adobe Haeuser und dem sehr eindrucksvollen Plaza besucht. Anschliessend ging es weiter nach Los Alamos. Hier wurde bis 1945 intensiv an der Entwicklung der Atombomben zur Beendigung des zweiten Weltkrieges im Rahmen des Manhatten Projektes gearbeitet. Da das Wetter heute leider sehr verregnet und sehr kalt ist, haben wir beschlossen noch einen weiteren Tag hier auf den Mesas zu verbringen. Morgen geht es dann weiter nach Taos und Cortez, wo wir den Nationalpark der Mesa Verde besuchen werden.

Colorado mit Mike & Susanna

Die letzten zwei Tage hier in der Gegend um Gunnisson waren einfach atemberaubend schoen. Unsere Fahrt von Castle Rock nach Gunnisson ging durch wunderschoene weitlaeufige Landschaften mit kilometerlangen geraden Strassen und rechts und links riesige Ranches. Gestern haben wir den Black Canyon of the Gunnisson River entlang der Nordkante entdeckt ... und es war wunderschoen. Hier fliesst der Gunnisson River durch eine sehr enge und tiefe Schlucht. Vielleicht ist er vergleichbar mit der Gorges du Verdon in Frankfreich. Schwarze Steine durchzogen mit roten Streifen, tosendes Wasser und tolle Steinformationen entlang des Wasserlaufes. Heute waren wir wieder in den Bergen und haben die Aspen Waelder mit ihren unglaublich intensiven gelben Farben genossen. Morgen geht es weiter in Richtung Albuquerque ... eine unserer laengsten Autofahrten an einem Tag in Richtung San Francisco. Wir werden wohl 8 bis 9 Stunden unterwegs sein.

The last couple days we spent with Mike and Susanna. We had a fantastic time exploring the Black Canyon of the Gunnison and the incredible fall colors of the Aspen trees in the Rockies.

Today we were out on Ohio Pass and dropped into Crested Butte - one of Colorado's better know backcountry ski resorts.

Tomorrow we're off to Albuquerque on the Million Dollar Highway. It'll be a long but scenic drive!
