Flying Home

We're back home again. An uneventful flight with LH491 straight from Seattle to Frankfurt - apart from the fact that the entertainment system on Marcus' seat wasn't working. He did have the window though which made the entertainment system oblivious in the first part anyway.

Before departure we still went to the 13 Coins - a very unique Seattle experience as we were told. It's a 24h diner and we had burgers for brunch to cover for the sloppy airline food.

We had a fantastic 3 weeks in the States and are very thankful to all you great people out there who made some time to see us, meet us and entertain us! We did have a blast and absolutely enjoyed every bit of our travels!

Nach 3 Wochen Urlaub in Seattle und Umgebung ging es am Sonntag zurück nach Hause. Mit einem Frühstück im 13 Coins direkt am Flughafen ging es pünktlich um 14h30 mit LH491 nach Frankfurt. Nach einer pünktlichen und sanften Landung sowie 4h Heimreise mit dem Zug sind wir nun bereits seit ein paar Stunden wieder zu Hause und sind sooooo müde!

Wir blicken zurück auf tolle 3 Wochen, viele schöne Erlebnisse und viele Erinnerungen an die vielen Menschen die wir getroffen haben.

BBQ & Poker

Time to say farewell - Our flight is leaving tomorrow and we have to catch up with important people. So we met in the morning with Chris and Lisa and their daughter Brooke for brunch at Macrina's on 1st Ave. It was great to meet up again after almost 10 years.

The afternoon was used to pack some bags and prepare our travel gear as good as we could. And then finally - the famous CHB salmon BBQ at McGilvra! Uncle Clem bbq'ed a great fish - yet again. And of course we met more family and friends, and as always it was really, really a lot of fun.

Paul then decided that we should start getting used to the German time zone again - alas we had to stay up the night and went out with Paul to play some Poker. Between the two of us we lost 60 USD, however, Paul compensated for that with a few good winning hands and came out on top. So no damage was done!

Unser letzter Tag in Seattle. Erst ein gemeinsames Frühstück mit einer Highschool Freundin von Marcus. Mit Chris und Lisa sowie ihrer Tochter Brooke waren wir im Macrina und haben ein richtig gutes Frühstück genossen. Anschließend ging es auch schon ans Packen für den Heimflug. Am Nachmittag gab es dann endlich das von Marcus so geliebte Salmon BBQ: Lachs gegrillt mit Zwiebeln, Zitronen und Kapern.

Zum Abschluss des Abends hat uns Paul noch zu einem Pokerspiel mitgenommen. Marcus und ich haben dabei zusammen 60 Dollar verloren ... so hatten wir diesmal nicht soviel Glück mit dem Glücksspiel wie letztes Jahr in Las Vegas. Naja, Paul hat die Ehre gerettet und als zweiter doch einiges an Gewinn mitnehmen können.

Heute haben wir endlich etwas Zeit unseren Blog zu aktualisieren. Morgen geht es bereits zurueck nach Hause, doch lest selbst, was wir so erlebt haben:

Friends & Fun

What a long day - we caught the 7.35 am ferry to Bremerton where we rented a car and headed down to Gig Harbor to meet Cindy. Packed the kayaks onto the car and headed to the harbor where we went out paddling. Unfortunately Cindy's inflatable kayak started losing air so that she had to abort and go to shore. We did switch kayaks later on and Cindy took Marcus for a fast spin through the far end of the harbor while Katrin waited with the stranded inflatable for us to pick her up. While kayaking through Gig Harbor we saw two nice old sailboats that apparantly starred in the Pirates of the Carribean movie.

Chris came over after kayaking and we had a great dinner at Cindy's house with magnificient views over the water and to Mount Rainier. It was a really, really fun and enjoyable day that passed much to quickly - thanks for all of that, Cindy! We started driving home to Seattle after 11 p.m. and battled finding a parking spot. Or to put it in other words, while we were trying to organise a parking for the
rental car we got a ticket for not paying. We will obviously appeal and see where this takes us. However, Marcus was quite upset with the guys from Republic Parking in Seattle.

Was fuer ein langer Tag! Gestern ging es frueh fuer uns los, da wir mit der Faehre nach Bremerton gefahren sind um dort ein Auto anzumieten. Wir wollten gegen 11h00 bei Cindy sein und mit ihr in Gig Harbour kajaken gehen. Wir hatten ein super gutes Fruehstueck im Familiy Pancake House in Bremerton und kamen so gestaerkt bei Cindy an.

Unsere Kajaktour fuehrte uns entlang der Bucht von Gig Harbour inkl. dem Blick auf relativ grosse Haeuser direkt am Wasser mit eigenem Bootsanleger, zwei Segelschiffen, die anscheinend im Film "Fluch der Karibik" mitgewirkt haben sowie des Leuchtturmes. Da das aufblasbare Kajak von Cindy leider Luft verlor, fiel die Tour etwas kuerzer aus als gedacht. So hat uns Cindy noch etwas die Umgebung von Gig Harbour und die Tacoma Narrows Bridge gezeigt.

Mit einem sehr leckeren Abendessen und einem wunderschoenen Blick ueber den Puget Sound auf den Mt. Rainier haben wir mit Cindy und ihrem Sohn Chris den Tag ausklingen lassen. Bis abends 11h00 haben wir noch vor dem Kamin gesessen und uns ueber Gott und die Welt unterhalten. Ein grosses Dankeschoen an Cindy und Chris fuer diesen tollen Abend. Es war Mitternacht, bis wir zurueck in Seattle waren.

Sail - Planes

While Katrin spent the morning in downtown Seattle, Jim and Marcus headed out to the Museum of Flight at Boeing Field. A lot has changed in the past year. Many new displays have been added - a space section, an entire new building for WW1 and WW2 figher planes, and an outdoor display featuring the No. 1 747, an Air Force 1 707, a Concorde, a prototype 737 and a prototype 727. The "boys" had a great time hanging out at the airfield!

In the evening we met Bob to go sailing at Shilshole Bay Marina. Skipper Hal took us out for a run across Puget Sound. We had excellent sailing conditions with flat waters and up to 10 kts wind. We did sail into the night and then went for a clam chowder at Ray's with Bob.

Schon wieder Flugzeuge! Heute hat Katrin beschlossen, einen Tag allein in Seattle zu verbringen und nicht mit ins Museum of Flight zu gehen. Marcus war dort zusammen mit seinem "personal" Dozent Jim und so wie es sich angehoert hat, war es sehr gut! Katrin hat derweil Seattles Bibliothek unsicher gemacht und den Blick vom Viewpoint genossen. Mit einem kleinen Spaziergang durch die Innenstadt, einem Kaffee von Starbucks sowie dem Sonnenschein im Gesicht hat der Tag sehr gut angefangen.

Am spaeten Nachmittag ging es dann wieder zusammen zum Segeln mit Bob und zwei seiner Segelkollegen. Mit etwas Wind und ruhigem Wasser ging es hinaus in den Puget Sound. Wir waren ca. 3h unterwegs und hatten einen wunderschoenen Sonnenuntergang sowie einen beeindruckenden Blick auf Mt. Rainier. Zum Abschied sind wir mit Bob noch eine Clam Chowder (Miesmuschelsuppe) essen gegangen ... sehr lecker!

Environmental Hiking

A ride in the Hybrid Toyota Prius up to the Cascade Mountains gets us close to Index Peak where we want to hike up to Lake Serene. However, we do have some time restraints. Dr. Jon has to work in the morning until 11 a.m., John has trouble getting the car through the car wash, and Luanne and Nate are expecting us back for a house tour and common dinner at 5.30 p.m.!

So we take off from the parking lot and climb up to the bridal veil falls. It's a nice trail through the forest and we have a great time sharing stories with John and Dr. Jon! Thanks for taking us up and spending the day with the Germans! As a treat Marcus gets to drive back the Hybrid Toyota Prius. Impression: a nice car that runs very quietly and certainly makes for a good commuter, city or long distance driving car. Unfortunately it cannot pull a glider trailer. Due to Marcus' driving we arrive 5 minutes late at Luanne's place - actually it was the Seattle traffic but we needed someone to blame it on. Everyone is gathered here (Jimbo, Ceil, Nate, Luanne, Clem, Lisa and the four hikers). Nate a Luanne have a very cool condo - it is build in an open, industrial style and has great views to Mount Rainier. Dinner at the Mexican's was great - and the grand finale was the frozen custard dessert. We were beached! Thanks all for treating us to that!

Heute gehen wir wandern mit John und Dr. Jon und haben erneut einen knappen Zeitplan. Da Dr. Jon noch am Morgen arbeiten musste, sind wir erst relativ spaet losgekommen. Unsere Wanderung fuehrte uns an den Mt. Index und die Gegend um Lake Serene. Aufgrund der Kuerze der Zeit hat es uns nur bis zu den wunderschoenen Wasserfaellen gereicht. Nach ca. 4h auf einem sehr interessanten Wanderweg und vielen interessanten Diskussionen mit John und Dr. Jon ging es zurueck in die Stadt.

Hier haben uns Nate und Luane sowie der Rest der Anderson Familie bereits zum Abendessen erwartet. Mexikanisches Essen und zum Nachtisch ein kleines Eis waren ein schoener Abschluss diesen Tages. Auch heute konnten wir wieder Mt. Rainier klar am Horizont von Seattle erkennen und Katrin ist jedesmal wieder beeindruckt, wie der Vulkankegel ueber der Stadt sich erhebt, obwohl er doch einige Meilen (ca. 50-60) von der Stadt entfernt ist.

Planes...

We both were looking forward to this - how can you combine Marcus' quest for "more jet" with Katrin's interest in production planning? There's only one way and that is to visit the Boeing factory in Everett which we did today. And it was exciting - at least from an aircraft point of view: We saw the brand new 787 Dreamliners - three ready for flight testing on the apron and 4 in the production line. We also were the first group to see the first assembled and brand new 747-800 aircraft as well as the Dreamlifter. The Dreamlifter is currently the largest transport aircraft in the world. It flies entire fuselage sections for the 787 from Japan to Everett for final assembly.

Viewing the production lines was also very interesting but we did not have enough time for ample studies of individual processes. We did see a few things though - and a lot has changed in the past 10 years. The 777 is assembled in a flow, i.e. the bodies are constantly moving at a speed of about 5cm per minute. However, Katrin wished to see a little more activity on the shop floor.

By the way, you might know that the Boeing building is the largest building by volume in the world. But did you know that the image on the hangar door is the largest digital image in the world?

After Boeing we visited Tom and Regine in Anacortes and really enjoyed the brief time we could spend with them! On our way back to Seattle we got caught in some traffic, made it in time though for Paul's fantastic Chicken Tikka Masala. Late in the evening we drove out to meet Uncle Bill and Aunt Susan for desert and tea as well as for a tour of the remodelled house. It really looks great and we enjoyed the seeing each other very much after such a long time.

Tomorrow we are off for a hike! More adventures to follow!

Wie kombiniert man Marcus Leidenschaft für das Fliegen mit Katrins Interesse für Fertigungsprozesse? Ganz klar - man besucht das Boeing Werk in Everett. Interessant war vor allem, dass einige ganz neue Modelle zu sehen waren. Dazu zählen der Dreamliner (787) und die überarbeitete 747-800 mit noch längerem Oberdeck und neuer Flügelgeometrie. Als weiteres Schmankerl bekamen wir den Dreamlifter zu sehen. Das ist quasi der Beluga von Boeing, mit dem u.a. komplette Rumpfsektionen für die 787 aus Japan nach Everett geflogen werden.

Der "Shopfloor" hat sich seit 10 Jahren mächtig verändert. Die 777 wird in Fließfertigung produziert und bewegt sich konstant mit 5cm pro Minute durch die Montagehalle. Die 747 wird in einer Taktfertigung gebaut. Einzelne Stadien der Flugzeugmontage lassen sich anhand der Montagestationen gut erkennen. Interessant war auch, dass generell relativ wenig Leute auf dem Shopfloor rumgelaufen sind und dass auch immer ziemlich viele Leute Pause machten. Naja...

Von Boeing sind wir nach Anacortes gefahren und haben Tom und Regine besucht. Das war sehr schön und wir haben uns gefreut, nach einigen Jahren wieder ein kurzes, spontanes Treffen organisiert zu bekommen. Tom hat die Gelegenheit genutzt, um uns Alaska noch schmackhafter zu machen.

Zurück in Seattle konnten wir Pauls vorzügliches Chicken Tikka Masala geniessen bevor wir schon zu unserem nächsten Termin nach Mercer Island weiter sind - wir haben uns gestern Abend mit Uncle Bill & Aunt Susan getroffen. Es war toll das neue Haus zu sehen und wieder Zeit mit Marcus Verwandten zu verbringen, die wir sonst nur alle Jahrzehnte lang sehen.

Paddling...

What a great day - we went out to the University District in the morning and just hung around in the sunshine a bit before we headed down to Lake Washington. We rented a canoe and paddled on the lake for two hours which was really great. Among tons of ducks we also saw a few herons that were quietly fishing in the side arms of the Arboretum.

Most of the time we spent organizing our schedule for the last days - it's a full plan. Boeing factory visit on Thursday, paired with visits for friends and family, hiking with John and Dr. Jon on Wednesday, sailing with Bob on Thursday and kayaking in Gig Harbor with Cindy on Friday. Saturday we'll be meeting some more special friends for a brunch and in the evening we'll have the big farewell bar-b-q! We're glad we got all our schedules coordinated and are looking forward to the next couple days!

Ein typischer Seattle Tag - Sonne, Wasser, Lebensqualität. Am Morgen waren wir im Uni-Viertel und haben uns dort ein wenig die Zeit vertrieben. Mit einem Eis von Baskin Robbins gestärkt ging es runter zum Lake Washington, wo wir uns ein Kanu für 2 Stunden gemietet haben. Wir sind durch das Arboretum gepaddelt und haben neben vielen Enten auch ein paar Reiher beim Fischen beobachten können.

Am Abend waren wir mit Paul und Linnea leckeres Steak essen - Surf and Turf - gutes Sirloin Steak mit Dungeness Crab... LECKER.

Change of plans...

We had a slight change of plans: Unfortunately Paul's Cessna is still down in California with a minor technical issue that requires some work so that we cannot fly to Oregon as originally planned. Anyway, we now have a couple more days in Seattle that are already completely scheduled.

As for today we had a European breakfast in Ballard and went to the local market. We planned some activities for the coming days (Boeing, Kayaking, Sailing, meeting friends,..) and enjoyed the sun along the waterfront near the grain terminal. Oh, and we cooked some good dinner. As an appetizer Paul treated us to some oysters. After an initial hesitation Katrin actually really started to like them!

We finished the evening with playing some Poker. Paul left the table a winner, Marcus also made some money and Katrin didn't have the luckiest hand tonight. Considering that we played for only a dollar each the loss did not really hurt.

Heute wollten wir eigentlich zusammen mit Paul und Linnea nach Oregon fliegen. Dies mussten wir nun leider absagen, da das Flugzeug noch immer in Kalifornien zur Reparatur ist. So haben wir nun 2 Tage mehr in Seattle und auch diese sind bereits gut verplant. Wir wollen noch Kayak fahren, Segeln, die Produktion der Boeing Flugzeuge anschauen und viele Freunde treffen.

Heute morgen sind wir wieder auf den Farmers Market mit Paul und Linnea gewesen und haben auch dort gleich "europäisch" gefrühstückt ... mmh lecker! Der Nachmittag war gefüllt mit den Planungen für die kommende Woche und mit gemeinsamen Kochen mit Paul. Er hat das Chicken Tikka Masala für morgen vorbereitet. Die Bilder von heute sind von unserem Spaziergang an der Waterfront und dem Blick auf die Beladestation von Schiffen mit Getreide. Diese kann 3.000 Tonnen Getreide pro Stunde ins Schiff verladen und ist anscheinend die ökologischste Beladestation in Amerika.

Auch unser Abend war kulinarisch wieder ein Höhepunkt: Wir hatten gegrillte Austern als Vorspeise ... für Katrin die ersten in ihrem Leben! Und auch das Chili con Carne von Linnea war super. Anschließend haben wir noch ein wenig Poker gespielt ... bzw. Poker spielend gelernt. Wir waren leider nicht ganz so erfolgreich wie Paul.

Wayne did it!!

This is totally throwing us off schedule but after our unsuccessful day yesterday - our search with skipper Wayne in vain for Orcas - we had to give it another try! This ment at the same time that we were up to a long drive from Telegraph Cove down to at least Nanaimo starting around 6pm earliest. We did manage the drive - and it was totally worth it. Why?

WE HAD AN AMAZING DAY - out on the water with Wanye and Jackie. Everything we did not see yesterday we saw today. 5 minutes out of the harbor we encountered about 100 white sided pacific dolphins that swam along with us for a while. And then we met the Orcas. They were feeding on salmon and we could watch their social behaviour - they were very active and playful and we managed to capture to of the many breaches on camera. It was purely awesome. We had stopped with the engines off a fairly good 100m from the Orcas away and dropped the hydrophone to listen to them. Eventually they came around all sides of the boat as we were floating there and gave us a good show. Finally Grandma called all of them together and they stopped their feeding, got together in a group and swam away. They were from the A30 matriline and it was just purely amazing to watch this intelligent coordinated behaviour. Marcus was very impressed by the vocals of the salmon eating resident Orcas.
We then headed off into some small islands and - bingo: Humpback whale! We saw a humpback swimming around and got one shot of his fluke.
For Mike: We need to go to Alaska together - I have to see more humpbacks... especially bubble feeding. They are great animals!
On the way back we saw a bald eagle going after a diving bird, the stellar sea lions and the occassional dalls porpoise. Simply put - a great day!
By the way, we went with Stubb's Island Whale Watching. They have a strong eco approach to the tour and also do educational talks and have a whale interpretive center on site. They also have a Blog with the sightings. Highly recommendable!!

Nach unserer ersten Whale Watching Tour haben wir uns für eine zweite entschieden und sind nicht enttäuscht worden! Kurz nachdem wir aus dem Hafen rausgefahren sind, haben uns ca. 100 Delphine begleitet und sind mit dem Boot und unheimlicher Geschwindigkeit mitgeschwommen. Etwas weiter haben wir dann eine komplette Orca Familie beim Lachsfressen beobachten und über das Hydrophone auch hören können. Dabei sind sie sogar aus dem Wasser hochgesprungen oder haben einfach nur den Kopf aus dem Wasser herausgestreckt.

Wir haben ca. 100m von ihnen entfernt mit dem Boot angehalten und den Motor ausgeschaltet. So war es sehr still auf dem Meer und wir haben einfach nur die Orcas beobachtet und ihnen zugehört. Wusstet ihr, dass jede Orca-Familie ihre eigene Sprache hat und sie sich so unterscheiden? Ähnlich wie es bei uns die verschiedenen Sprachen und Dialekte gibt.

Etwas später konnten wir dann auch das "Social Behaviour" beobachten. Die Anführerin der Gruppe (immer das älteste Weibchen) hat auf einmal nach der Familie gerufen und an der Wasseroberfläche auf ihren ältesten Sohn gewartet. Als dann alle beieinander waren, ging es zusammen zurück in die Jonstone Strait. So hatten wir die Möglichkeit noch ein wenig mit ihnen zusammen zu sein und sie zu beobachten.

Zum Abschluss unserer Tour haben wir dann noch einen Buckelwal beobachten können, sowie einige Seelöwen, die sich in der Sonne gewärmt haben und auch einen Weißkopfadler, der versucht hat, einen Vogel aus dem Wasser zu angeln, es aber leider nicht geschafft hat.

Es war so ein schöner und sehr eindrücklicher Nachmittag, den wir nicht missen möchten! Diese Tiere im Wasser und in ihrer Familie beobachten zu können hat uns sehr beeindruckt. Während unserer Fahrt hat uns Jackie aber auch ein paar traurige Details mit auf den Heimweg gegeben. Da das Meerwasser so stark vergiftet ist mit allen möglichen Chemikalien, sind auch die Meerestiere und so auch die Orcas voll mit Giften ... annähernd 100%. Dies hat wohl bereits die Lebenserwartung der Orcas stark reduziert von ca. 60 Jahren auf ca. 30-40 Jahre für männliche Tiere. Viele der Gifte sind bereits in Kanada / USA und Europa verboten, aber sie gelangen leider immer noch von Südostasien hierher und das Wasser braucht nur 5 - 7 Tage!

Searching with Wayne in vain...

Oh boy!! Yesterday we saw the Orcas right off the beach near Telegraph Cove. So obviously we were very excited to go out today and see the whales directly from the boat. And off we went down Johnstone Strait to the Michael Biggs Natural Reserve which is core "Killer Whale" habitat. Our skipper Wayne was taking us down Johnstone Strait but all in vain. We heard that the Orcas had moved further south and were evading us. It was the first day with no whale sightings in 2 months. We were the special group that went back home "empty handed". We did see some Dalls Porpoises and Stellar Sea Lions though. However, this was not going to be it. We had our minds made up and scheduled another trip for tomorrow afternoon.

So having seen nothing on the water in the morning we decided to see something on the land and went out to Cape Scott. This is a State Park at the most northern tip of Vancouver Island. It is a very remote area and maybe a place to stumble across the occasional bear. We did a nice short afternoon / evening hike down to a bay - without any bear encounters. It was a very nice walk though. We are very curious about tomorrow! Let's see what happens...

Nachdem wir gestern bereits vom Land aus Wale gesichtet haben und die Leute von den Whalewatching Touren so viel zu berichten hatten, waren wir sehr gespannt auf unsere Tour. Wir sind am Morgen im Nebel gestartet und die Johnstone Strait gen Süden gefahren. Unsere suchende Blicke über das relativ ruhige Wasser wurden leider immer wieder enttäuscht. Das war wohl die erste Tour seit 2 Monaten an der keine Wale oder Delphine gesichtet wurden. Gegen Ende unserer 4h Tour haben wir noch ein paar Seelöwen und Tümmler gesichtet.

Da wir an diesem Tag eine der größten Tidenhube überhaupt hatten, waren die Strömungen zwischen den Inseln relativ stark und wir konnten sehr eindrücklich die verschiedenen Strömungen und daraus entstehenden Wasserstrudel erkennen. Diese Strudel können bis zu 10m Durchmesser und 1m Tiefe erreichen. Als wir vom Boot gingen hat uns Jackie gesagt, dass die Nachmittagstour direkt in die Gegend fahren wird, wo sie Buckelwale sehen werden ... sie hat bereits ein paar gesehen. Leider haben wir für diese Nachmittagstour kein Ticket mehr bekommen, und so werden wir es morgen nochmal versuchen!

Den Nachmittag haben wir dann am nördlichsten Ende der Insel verbracht und sind in den Cape Scott Nationalpark gefahren. Hier sind wir noch ein wenige durch den Regenwald gelaufen und haben einen wunderschönen Sandstrand erkundet. Doch auch hier hatten wir heute kein Glück damit Wildlife zu sehen. Kein Bär ist uns über den Weg gelaufen, obwohl viele andere Leute die wir gefragt haben uns immer wieder von Bären erzählt haben!

Naja, die Landschaft war heute wirklich eindrucksvoll ... aber leider kein (kaum) Wildlife!

By the way, an interesting fact: Our current position is N 50° 32.956' W 126° 49.742' at Telegraph Cove. Compared to Germany this is equivalent to the latitude of Fulda. In Canada at this latitude we have glaciers that come down as low as 1.500 mNN (the height of the Feldberg in the Black Forest), wild bears, cougars and of course whales. We just thought that this was kind of interesting.

Heute wollten wir noch wissen, auf welchem Breitengrad wir uns befinden. Telegraph Cove liegt auf N 50° 32.956' W 126° 49.742'. Dies entspricht in etwas der Höhe von Fulda. Doch hier haben wir sehr hohe Berge mit Gletschern die bis auf 1.500m hinabreichen

Whales and more

We left Powell River early this morning on the 8:10 a.m. ferry to Comox which is the port on Vancouver Island. From there we drove nearly 4 hours up to Telegraph Cove. We both found Telegraph Cove itself to be kind of touristy which was reflected by the unsuspected sheer unfriendliness of the people in the visitor's center and at the local motel.

Apart from the grumpy village ambassadors we had a great time in Telegraph Cove. First we grabbed some lunch at the Orca Cafe and then visited the local whale interpretation center. Anna - a naturalist interpreter with a Swiss mother - took tons of time to give us a privat tour around the center. The overhead hanging skelleton of the finwhale was very very impressive.
After the whale center we walked around and found a quiet spot at the tip of a small peninsula where we sat down in the sunshine and observed the wildlife. Among others we saw bald eagles, porpoises, flying fish and finally - quite unexpected - a pod of Orcas that swam right past us and around the bay. We could watch them and here them breath for about half an hour. This was a very exciting experience and we both enjoyed it very much!

Unfortunately we didn't find any accomodation in Telegraph Cove so we settled for an excellent B&B at Port McNeill about 30 minutes away. The B&B has a hot tub which we already tested plus a great little appartment, including kitchen where we are now preparing our dinner. Tomorrow we'll be served breakfast before we go out to watch the whales - hopefully!

Heute haben wir endlich die ersten Wale gesichtet! Unsere Reise hat uns heute morgen von Powell River nach Port McNeill geführt. Nach einer tollen Fährfahrt zur Vancouver Island und ca. 4h entspannter Fahrt durch den Nadelwald der Insel haben wir im Telegraph Cove gegen 13h00 unser heutiges Ziel für den Nachmittag gefunden.

Mit einem Blick in das Walmuseum mit einem beeindruckendem riesengroßen an der Decke hängendem Walskelett hat unser Rundgang in diesem kleinen Ort in der Bucht begonnen. Leider haben wir dort keine Übernachtung mehr finden können und auch die Kajaktour hat nicht mehr geklappt. So haben wir den Nachmittag an einem einsamen felsigen Strand verbracht und das Treiben auf dem Wasser beobachtet. Wir haben vor allem Wildlife gesehen: Weißkopfadler, die versucht haben, Lachs zu fangen. ca. 5-8 Orcas inkl. kleinem Orca die einmal die komplette Bucht umrundet haben. Weiterhin haben wir Delphine gesehen (zumindest glauben wir dass das welche waren :-) und "fliegende" Fische.

Mit einem schönen Sonnenuntergang und erneut aufziehendem Nebel verabschieden wir uns von diesem schönen Flecken Erde in das nur 10km entfernte Port McNeill. Hier haben wir ein komfortables Bed & Breakfast gefunden, bei dem wir sogar den Whirlpool schon getestet haben. Morgen geht es erneut zum Telegraph Cove ... und diesmal fahren wir hinaus in die Johnstone Strait zum Whalewatching.

Oh wie lecker! Da wir heute im Seaside Villa Motel übernachten und eine eigene Küche sowie BBQ Möglichkeiten zur Verfügung gestellt bekommen, haben wir uns für einen Salat und Gegrilltes entschieden. Mit einem fantastischen Blick auf den Sonnenuntergang, das Meer sowie Vancouver Island und Texada Island beschließen wir den heutigen Tag.
