Fitz Roy

Wind, Wind und nochmal Wind. So sind wir die letzten 3 Tage von Wind ... aber auch mit Sonne auf unseren kleinen Treks rund um den Fitz Roy begleitet worden. Wir glauben, wir haben noch recht viel Glueck gehabt, da es relativ warm war und die Sonne schien.

Auf unserer Fahrt von El Calafate nach El Chalten haben wir eine traumhaft schoene Sicht auf das Gebirgsmassiv des Fitz Roy gehabt. Schon von weitem konnten wir die Berge gegen den blauen Himmel sehen. Am Horizont auf der chilenischen Seite der Anden tuermte sich schon eine Wolkenwand, aber der Sonnenuntergang war richtig toll.

Dieses tolle Wetter haben wir noch auf unserem ersten Tag mitgenommen und so konnten wir den Fitz Roy erneut in seiner vollen Schoenheit sehen. Dann wurde das Wetter leider etwas wolkiger um die Bergspitzen, zum Laufen war es jedoch wirklich angenehm. Nur der staendige sehr starke Wind war ein stetiger Begleiter auf unserem Weg zum Cerro Torre. Hier haben wir die Gletscher in den Lago Torre gleiten sehen ... nur der Cerro selber blieb in den Wolken versteckt.

Heute ging es dann in ca. 4 h wieder zurueck nach El Chalten. Hier nehmen wir in ca. 1,5 h den Bus zurueck nach El Calafate und sind gespannt, ob uns ein Trek im Torres del Paine Nationalpark vergoennt ist. Mal schauen, ob der Streik schon beendet ist. Es waren naemlich bis zu 1500 Touristen "eingesperrt" und wir haben einige getroffen, die die 30 km von Puerto Natales zur argentinischen Grenze gelaufen sind, da keine Busse oder Taxis durch die Strassenblockaden durch sind.

Wir halten Euch auf dem laufenden ... sofern wir Internetzugang haben. Das ist am "Ende der Welt" naemlich gar nicht so einfach :-) Geniesst so lang die Fotos von unserem Trek. Es toll und wir sind richtig froh um unser gutes Equipment. Wir haben noch keine Nacht gefroren, unser Zelt hat dem Wind sehr gut stand gehalten und Nass sind wir auch nicht wirklich geworden.

So we did manage to catch the bus and made it back to El Calafate for two nights. Our Fitz Roy Trek was great - an easy 3-day trek in stunning scenery. We have to admit that we got quite lucky with the Patagonian weather!

Heading into the park we could already make out the Fitz Roy mountain range from the distance. It would be the only time we could see the mountain in its full size. Very impressive. We got into El Chaltén - the Fitz Roy base - at 10 pm and headed for the hostel which was a dump. Camping probably would have been better but we still got a good night's sleep and headed out for our first day at 8 am the next morning. The clear skies had given way to high clouds but Fitz Roy was still visible as we left El Chaltén. By the time we had climbed the first small hill though, the peaks were in the clouds and to the west the weather was becoming more and more uncomfortable. So obviously it started to rain two hours into the trek but we made it to our sheltered campsite in the woods where we set up camp for the night and had a big lunch.ç

After lunch we headed out into the rain without our backpacks to see the Glaciar de los Piedras Blancas. Back in camp it was dinner time and since we were quite chilled out we immediately jumped into our sleeping bags and warmed up. We had a dry and warm night inside the tent while at the same on the outside a big rainstorm was going on.

By the next morning though, the sky had cleared except for a small plume of clouds at the summit of Fitz Roy and so we got to enjoy a beautiful view of the freshly snow covered peaks in front of a blue Patagonian sky. The whole day remained sunny but very windy - we experienced our first real Patagonian wind gusts that actually can throw you off your feet even with a 20 kg backpack.

Our second night was at the De Agostini Campsite below Lago Torre. Unfortunately the mountains were back in the clouds by the afternoon and so we didn't see Cerro Torre. It would remain like this even on the third day when we hiked back out to El Chaltén in the sunshine. All in all a great and easy 3-day trek.

We are now off to bigger things - Torres del Paine is waiting and since the strike is over we are going!
