Discover the World!: Trekking Lake Mascardi

Our first trek is accomplished. We had fantastic weather, great scenery and the nature we hoped for. Since this trek was so great, we decided to only put in one day here in Bariloche to fill up on supplies, eat some real food and then head out again. So consequently tomorrow we will be leaving on another 3-day trek into the mountains - this time higher up where we will hike to the Refugios Martin and Jakob.

Back to our Lake Mascardi Trek though - it was just beautiful, following the shoreline of the lake in smooth up and downs. We had great campsites on the beaches with literally no other people to share with. The second day had us climb over a small pass before descending down onto the other arm of the lake - the Brazo de Tronador. The climb was gruesome, not because of its steepness or the altitude we had to cover but because of very aggressive Tabaños. Tabaños are horseflies that relentlessly eat you up the moment you stop moving. These animals were a real plague and we must have killed hundreds of them. Apparantly the most effective method to fight the Tabaños is to eat garlic - so we will always have a clove of garlic with us from now on.

From the top of the pass we could finally see Monte Tronador - the highest mountain in the region which would show us the way for the next 2 days. We also had a view of the Isla Courazon -a heart shaped island. And again we dropped down to the shoreline continuing in a long day until 7 pm to finally reach a beautiful beach which was our campsite for the night.

The third day was a short one since we were almost half a day ahead of our schedule and we reached another beautiful beach after 4 hours. So we set up camp and did an afternoon on the beach.

Our last day was another challenging one since we had to ford two ice cold, deep and fast running rivers. So - shoes off, packs repacked for crossing, and off we go... Around 2pm we reach the rendez-vous point with the bus and have 3 1/2 hours spare time in which we wait for the bus and battle the tabaños - again!

All in all - except for the tabaños - a great trek. We are now off for another 3 day tour up into the mountains. Weather looks great - although we might see some clouds and an occassional sprinkle on Thursday.

Unser erster Trek ist erfolgreich beendet und war wunderschoen! Wir sind 4 Tage und 3 Naechte rund um den Lake Mascardi gelaufen, haben an wunderschoenen Straenden unser Zelt aufgeschlagen und eine tolle Aussicht auf die Berge im Lake District sowie auf Gletscher genossen.

Das Wasser hier ist unglaublich sauber, so dass wir an jedem Fluss unsere Trinksaecke und Wasserflaschen wieder aufgefuellt haben. Selbst der See war so klar, dass man die Steine am Boden sehen konnte.

Wir haben auch viele dieser Fluesse queren muessen, nur am letzten Tag waren die Querungen etwas komplizierter. Da sie recht tief waren, sehr kalt vom Gletscherwasser und ziemlich schnell, mussten wir die Stiefel ausziehen und sind quasi barfuss ueber den Fluss.

Der zweite Tag war eigentlich der anstrengendste und laengste Tag. Hier ging es ueber einen Pass, einen fast zugewachsenen Weg nach oben, ziemlich eng und das groesste Problem waren eigentlich die Tabaños - eine Art Riesenfliegen - die uns immer wieder gestochen haben. Uns haben bestimmt an die 20 dieser Fliegen die ganze Zeit umflogen und waren ziemlich laestig. Als wir jedoch oben am Aussichtspunkt angekommen waren, der Wind geweht hat, wir unser Picknick genossen haben und die Sicht auf die Insel in Herzform genossen haben ... da waren die Strapazen des Aufstiegs schon wieder vergessen.

Und weil der erste Trek so toll war, geht es fuer uns heute schon wieder auf den naechsten Trek in die Berge. Von einer Huette zur naechsten, 2 Naechte, 3 Tage. Wir freuen uns drauf!
