Discover the World!: Citadel of Pumamarka

Heute haben wir das tolle Wetter fuer eine 6 stuendige Wanderung im Sacred Valley genutzt. Bei ziemlich viel Sonne ging es die erst neu gebaute Strasse entlang zu den Ruinen von Pumamarka. Da die Ruinen auf 3.400m Hoehe liegen, haben wir somit heute 700 Hoehenmeter ueberwunden.

Beeindruckend sind die vielen Wasserkanaele mit richtig viel sprudelnden Wasser, die uns die ganze Zeit begleitet haben. So wie es aussieht, haben die Inca das Wasser der Bergfluesse ueberall hingeleitet um ihre Felder zu bewaessern. Und so haben wir an einem solchen Wasserlauf unser Picknick aufgeschlagen und die tolle Sicht ueber das Tal genossen.

Nach einem Abstecher an die Ruinen ... unserem hoechstem Punkt an diesem Tag, ging es zurueck nach Ollantaytambo. Hier haben wir den Inca Trail benutzt und sind so hoch ueber dem Tal auf schmalen Pfaden, immer entlang der Wasserlaeufe und vorbei an den typischen Terassen fuer den Ackerbau gelaufen.

Morgen geht es ganz frueh um 6h02 mit dem Zug zum Machu Pichu und wir hoffen, dass wir auch morgen so tolles Wetter haben werden.

Pumamarka - old Incan ruins in the high lands of the Peruvian Andes were our goal today. With clear skies and beautiful sunshine we set out on foot to climb up to 3.400 mNN - the ruins of Pumamarka. Ollanta is 2.700 mNN high, so it was quite a climb. All in all we were out for 6 hours and a distance of roughly 20km.

The interesting part of today was to see all the ancient Incan irrigation channels that are still in use today. These irrigation systems are your constant companions when hiking in Incan territory.

After looking around at the ruins - we were the only people, by the way - we headed back to Ollanta by way of the Inca Trail. This is the old commercial route the Incans used to get from their different villages to spiritual centers like Ollantaytambo or Cusco. It is a beautiful path, hugging the mountain slopes high over the valley - and always following the irrigatios system. It was a perfect day.

Tomorrow we have to be at the train station at 5.32 a.m. to catch the 6.02 a.m. train to Machu Picchu. We will spend the day there and return to Ollanta late in the evening.
