Finally the day of the first "Touristic Highlight" had come - our trip to Machu Picchu. We did the trip in one day from Ollantay, taking the 6.02 train in the morning to Aguas Caliente and the return train at 19.24 in the evening.
Aguas Caliente is the gate to Machu Picchu and it is a 100% artifical town with the only purpose to accomodate tourists. Therefore, prices are 2-3 times higher than in Ollanta and the staff in Aguas let you feel that all they want is your money.
So before even getting up to Machu Picchu, the first impression was a very disappointing experience: unfriendly staff, prices way out of bounds and a very chaotic organisation. A few examples: Access to the ruins is either by bus or by a 2 hour hike up the mountain. The bus costs 14 US$ per person (out and return) - for a 15 minute ride. Train ticket to Machu Picchu (42 km) costs 156 US$ for two persons. Entrance fee to Machu Picchu costs about 100 US$ for two persons. For South American standards a pure rip off. We wouldn`t mind paying the price if we at least got a smile or a "gracias" when paying - instead only grumpy, unfriendly staff. Anyway - our other highlight was at the entrance gate to the site: It was pouring rain, foggy and we had our backpacks with raingear and dry clothes along. The staff at first wanted to prohibit us to take the packs into the park but we insisted and took them along anyway. Oh yeah - and for 100 US$ entrance fee you don`t even get a park map or any other hints...
So - to wrap up the beginning: We were very frustrated by the time we were inside the park. The downpour and the fog didn`t help to improve our mood. So we decided to hike up a hill to the sungate which is the entrance point of the Inca Trail in to the park. We waited about two hours in the fog at the gate with the first very friendly and talkative staff from the park. It was fun and after two hours the fog finally lifted and we got great views of Machu Picchu. We then hiked back into the village and wandered about, enjoying the buildings and views. We must say, that Machu Picchu is spectacular. The setting in the mountains is just incredible and it is amazing to see with which precision the Incans built the cities.
So the overall resumee of ours was: Machu Picchu is an incredible and spectacular sight and we would recommend anyone to go and see it if you do get the chance. However, everything around is just horrible (the town Aguas Caliente, the staff, the bus service to and from the mountain, etc..). One day definitely is enough for Machu Picchu and we really were glad to have done it in a day trip from Ollanta - it never felt any better returning to Winn and Wow`s Casa de Wow in Ollanta!

Gestern frueh ging es fuer uns mit dem 6h02 Zug von Ollantay zum Machu Picchu und es war eine wunderschoene Zugfahrt durch das Sacred Valley mit einem Blick auf das tossende Wasser des Flusses. Im Januar 2010 ist dieser Fluss wohl auf die 5fache Hoehe angestiegen und hat das gesamte Tal ueberflutet. Nur die alten Inka-Bruecken haben die wirkenden Kraefte ueberstanden. Viele Einwohner haben ihre Wohnungen verloren und die einzige Verbindung zum Machu Picchu und dem dazugehoerigen Ort Aguas Calientes ... der Zug ... war fuer 4 Monate unterbrochen. Heute ist alles wieder aufgebaut, aber in der Erinnerung der Leute ist es natuerlich immer noch vorhanden. Der Grund fuer die heftigen Ueberschwemmungen war wohl, dass alle Berghaenge keine Baeume mehr haben. Alles wurde in den letzten Jahren abgeholzt und in Kombination mit dem Klimawechsel spuert man also auch hier die Auswirkungen.
Okay, einmal in Aguas Calientes angekommen, ging es fuer uns darum, Tickets fuer den Bus und Eintrittskarten fuer den Machu Picchu zu erhalten. Hier haben wir leider unsere erste schlechte Erfahrung in Peru und Ecuador gemacht. Es war richtig teuer, man konnte nur mit Bargeld bezahlen, die Geldscheine mussten neu sein und die Leute hier waren wirklich unfreundlich. Leider haben wir schon fast mit soetwas gerechnet ...
Nach ca. 15 Minuten Busfahrt durch das atemberaubende Tal hoch auf die "Alten Berg" wie Machu Picchu heisst hatten wir leider immer noch keine Sicht auf die Ruinen. Es hat furchtbar gerechnet und alles war in den Wolken und somit im Nebel. Wir haben uns dann auf dem Weg Richtung Inca Trail gemacht, da hier das sogenannte "Sonnentor" war. Hier treffen die Wanderer des Inca Trail das erste Mal auf Machu Picchu und fuer uns gab es nach 2h warten eine atemberaubende klassische Sicht auf die Ruinen. Die Wolken hoben sich an, die Sonne kam ein wenig raus und so konnten wir schlussendlich doch noch das Weltkulturerbe von oben geniessen. Nun ging es fuer uns wieder runter vom Sonnentor und in die Ruinen, Tempel, Haeuser usw. Da jetzt auch die Sonne immer mehr rauskam, wurde der Nachmittag immer schoener und Machu Picchu hat sich uns von seiner sehr schoenen Seite gezeigt.
Die Archeologen sind sich nicht so ganz einig, warum auf den Gipfeln dieses Berges ein Dorf entstanden ist. War es eine letzte Zufluchtsstaette der Incas oder einfach nur ein Dorf oder doch ein religioeses Zentrum? Fuer alle Varianten gibt es moegliche Beweise, jedoch keine wirkliche Ueberlieferung.
Am Abend sind wir dann wieder zurueck nach Ollantay mit dem Zug gefahren und haben unser ruhiges und gemuetliches Hostel Casa de Wow genossen.
