Markets and Botanical Gardens

Finally we are back to update you on the happenings of the last days. Due to some problems the internet connection was very slow so that it was not really possible to post anything. We are back up to normal speed again - so here we go:

The mornings we obviously spent with our Spanish teachers Paul and Jorge. The afternoons are pretty much open for us to decide what to do. Yesterday however, we met with the local distributor from Marcus' work and were treated to an excellent lunch outside Quito. In return, Marcus gave a two hour update on the newest products - in Spanish.

Today we spent the afternoon in the botanical garden which is currently holding an exhibition on fish from the Amazonas river. Currently there is high life in town as Quito is preparing for its yearly festivities in honor of the foundation of the town. The big day is December 6th (thf founding day in 1534). Tomorrow we plan to visit the Equator, however on Saturday we will most likely be in town to party and enjoy all the festivities.

A few words about the weather: It is quite cool in the morning but warms up to about 15°C to 18°C in the afternoons. Unfortunately it has been cloudy all days so that we only had one short glimpse at the mountains on Monday.

Einige interessante Tage in Quito liegen hinter uns. Vormittags lernen wir zusammen mit Paul und Jorge von der Pichincha Sprachschule Spanisch. Wir kommen ziemlich gut voran und koennen uns schon ganz gut mit allen unterhalten.

Gestern hat uns ein Kollege von Marcus zum Essen ausserhalb von Quito ausgefuehrt und so konnten wir bereits einen Eindruck von der Groesse Quitos erhalten. Leider hat man auf der Fahrt ueber die Berge auch viele Armenviertel gesehen ... 60% der Einwohner in Quito haben keinen Job mit einer Sozialversicherung.

Heute nachmittag waren wir im Botanischen Garten. Hier gab es auch eine Ausstellung ueber die Lebewesen des Amazonas. Am beeindruckendsten waren die Piranhas und Aale sowie die schwarzen Messerfische.

Morgen oder am Wochenende geht es mit Anabel zum Aequator. Da Quito aktuell seine Gruendung vom 6. Dezember 1534 feiert, werden wir am Samstag Keny - die Tochter von Anabel - bei Ihrem Auftritt begleiten und eventuell am Abend noch mit der Sprachschule im Bus durch die Altstadt fahren.
